Bed Bug Spray

Over the past few years several companies have come out with bed bug sprays.  A lot of you are wondering which sprays are effective and how to use them.

It is important to remember that, like everything else, sprays are just one of many tools that you will need to get rid of bed bugs in your home.  Bed bug sprays can be used as a deterrent for bed bugs in much the same way as diatomaceous earth.  However, they do not offer 100% assurance that bed bugs will be repelled or killed.  This is an important point to remember.

If you travel and are concerned about catching bed bugs in a hotel, you should consider using a bed bug spray to treat your luggage.  This will dissuade bed bugs from entering your luggage but it will not kill all bed bugs and bed bug eggs.  In order to be 100% sure that you are not bringing bed bugs into your home, you must always heat-treat your luggage when you return home from a trip.

So, what bed bug spray should you buy?  There are dozens of sprays on the market but they all seem to fall into two categories.  Some sprays are “non-toxic” and others are based on pesticides.  We recommend using only “non-toxic” sprays on any personal belongings that may come into contact with your skin or clothing.

Cedar based bed bug sprays have become extremely popular in the past few years.  These sprays actually use cedar oil to suffocate the bed bug.  They are completely non-toxic and work well to discourage bed bugs.  However there major drawbacks.  First, they make everything smell like pine-sol, that cleaning solution with an overpowering smell. Second, cedar bed bug sprays are also not 100% effective.

Quick recap.  Bed bug sprays are a great tool to discourage bed bugs but you should heat treat if you want to be 100% sure that bed bugs are dead.
